Leading-edge and trailing-edge dimmers, for example TRIAC dimmers, are commonly installed in conjunction with traditional incandescent lamps. Their operating principle is fairly simple. 50 Hz 230V mains voltage is delivered as alternating current (AC) and thus changes polarity 50 times per second. Each polarity change consists of two sinus half-waves. TRIAC dimmers and other phase cutting dimmers utilize this characteristic for power limiting. Each half-wave is cut short – either its beginning (leading edge) or at its end (trailing edge). Variation of the cutting range changes the transmitted power and thus the brightness of the incandescent lamp. Of course, today, LED lighting is a vastly superior choice to traditional luminaires due to markedly improved energy efficiency and longevity.
