What is an IP-Rating?

IP Protection Ratings for Electrical Devices

Many devices feature an IP protection rating to demonstrate their protection against dust and water that could impair functionality and lead to system failures.

What is an IP Rating?

An IP rating stands for "Ingress Protection rating," an internationally standardized measure developed by the International Protection Marking that indicates the degree of protection an electrical device or enclosure provides against dust and water. The IP protection rating is followed by two digits. The first digit indicates how well a power supply is protected against solids, and the second digit indicates how well it is protected against liquids of different volumes, pressures, and temperatures. The first digit ranges from 1 to 6, and the second digit ranges from 1 to 9. IP68 means the product is completely protected against solids (6) and can withstand pressure for an extended period (8). The reason for using the term "IP certification" is to avoid words like "waterproof" or "water-resistant" to prevent confusion regarding the product's capabilities.

What is IP67?

If a power supply you purchase has an IP67 protection rating, it is displayed as "waterproof." The 6 would indicate "complete protection against dust over an extended period," including "protection against contact with objects larger than 1 mm in diameter, such as wires or smaller tools." The 7 means the power supply is "protected against brief immersion in water under pressure between 15 cm and 1 m." Power supplies with IP67 protection rating are better protected than power supplies with IP65 or IP66 protection ratings, as these are only considered water-resistant and therefore do not provide complete protection.

Why is a Protection Rating Important?

Power supplies with IP67 or IP68 protection ratings are better equipped for harsh environments and reduce the risk of damage from solids or liquids, which is crucial for individuals using the device outdoors, in industrial environments, or in areas susceptible to water exposure. A protection rating gives customers confidence that the device has been tested and verified for its resistance to solids and liquids, which is important for expensive products. A protection rating is important when companies develop a new power supply that meets customer requirements and protects against various environments to ensure optimal performance is achieved.
